I was sitting in my 10^th grade Chemistry class on September 11^th of 2001. I remember my teacher, Mr. Sufka telling us what had happened. We were able to see some images from Yahoo, but the internet was overwhelmed that day and our schools TVs were unfortunately down for repair.  We discussed what happened and what could happen next. We all knew we were going to war. This weighed heavily with Mr. Sufka who was an Army Reservist, as well as one of our best teachers.

So, the mid-term elections are behind us, for the most part. Excluding a few recounts (I’m looking at you Minnesota). What is confusing to me about these elections is that people voted for both parties. In Minnesota, the Republican Party took the State Senate and State House for the first time in a very long time. But, the DFL (MN Democrats) took the Governorship for the first time since the eighties.

How can one manage the budget, fight multiple wars and have socially progressive programs? This seems like a recipe for disaster, bankruptcy and possibly far worse.

Everyday I get more and more befuddled by the mess that we call the news. I am shocked to see so many people attack science, intellectualism and education. I am shocked to see so many people cling to pre-modern beliefs that are bad ideas. I am not talking about beliefs such as religion or morality; those are for individuals to choose on their own.

Recently, the US Coast Guard has created a rule to ban anyone from coming within 65 feet of the oil containment booms.  Without Coast guard approval, of course. They originally tried to make the exclusion zone 300 feet. They claim that this is done to ensure the safety of the public. However, it is currently preventing reporters and members of the media from reporting the conditions down in the Gulf.
