Politablog: The New Politics of Technology

After graduating college Dave Schoofs and David Brooks decided they wanted to make a difference by providing a voice on the web. Schoofs, the tech guru with a passion for technology, pitched the idea to Brooks about starting up the site. Brooks, who loves to write about politics and has a moderate stance, loved the idea of the site. They both consider the moderate stance as one that no longer existed.

Together they had a vision. Politablog was born to become a platform for dialogue and for an exchange of ideas. Having embraced the ever changing nature of the web and internet marketing, Politblog.com has captured the heart of many internet readers on its website. The two founders have created Twitter accounts, Facebook fan pages, and a new channel on Youtube. Not to mention the many other social networking sites that they actively engage.

The mission was simple, to create a form that would provide users with meaningful information about politics and the world around them.

“I feel that in politics today there is too much extremism. There is no longer a moderate voice,” said Political Scientist David Brooks, who graduated from Hamline University. “It just seems like we are really forced to choose really liberal or conservative. Like if you are republican you have to support Bush along with everything he did; if you are a democrat you have to stand by Al Gore or other extreme liberals.”

Brooks thinks his generation is not represented and that the politicians have failed to talk about the issues that they care about. Student loan reform is a popular issue with the founder and he asserts that people coming out of college were supposed to have a job and make money. Now that they have found that to be untrue they are losing faith in the system. He believes that Obama needs to do something about this issue.

According to Brooks, democracy is about the exchange of opinions and ideas. The internet opened the door to new resources and has expanded this exchange to unimagined levels. Schoofs, ignited by his passion for all things technology, wanted to create a user-friendly blog with an emphasis on politics so that people could speak their minds.

“After figuring out our initial premise with Politablog.com, the project really aligned with my interests. I have had always a special place in my heart for the web, and all the things it has to offer,” said Schoofs who has a degree in Digital Multimedia Design. “Brooks is extremely passionate about politics and so when our paths crossed and we got started talking about it. It was the logical way to go.”

Politablog offers commentary, in-depth analysis and discussion for current political issues. Both founders have started a grass roots movement with the use of technology and combining it with their passions.

Both founders agree that the future of journalism is very much at stake. Brooks believes we need journalism, with Politablog and websites like examiner.com are the future of citizen journalism. With over 400 fans on Facebook, more than 100 Twitter followers Politablog will be a force to be reckoned with on the web, and pave the way for new models of delivering news across different platforms.
