With the arrival of the Android operating system Comscore this Thursday released a report that indicates Google’s smart phone is becoming popular. Thanks to the Verizon Ad Campaign the Android looks to compete with Apple’s popular iPhone.

The market share For Android is small compared to other players, but has doubled its market share to 3.5 percent in October 2009. The analysis from the report is owners of the iPhone and the Android engage in mobile media. In other words, given the versatile functions of both phones users prefer engaging mobile media before email, browsing news or launching applications.

Thanks to the marketing campaigns for Google’s phone, 37 percent had heard about the Android in the month of November 2009, whereas 3 months only 22 percent had learned about the device. Consumers have more options with Google’s platform and race against Apple.

The survey included an analysis of future buyers for smart phones. Blackberry Pearl comes in first place with 17 percent followed by the iPhone 3GS with 14 percent and Verizon Droid coming in with 8 percent. The increase in the numbers for Google is in part to having multiple carriers, which may cut into iPhone’s market share.

The competition escalated earlier this year with Apple’s App Store blocking the Google Voice app. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) pressured Apple to disclose reasons for blocking it and also investigating the exclusivity between AT&T.

With competition increasing rumors of an iPhone coming to Verizon have not been confirmed. However, with Google quickly increasing its pressure on the iPhone and other players it may be beneficial for Apple to carry its device on other carriers.
