Brock Lesnar was forced to pull out of his upcoming fight with Shane Carwin again due to being diagnosed with mononucleosis. The bout for the UFC heavyweight championship was originally scheduled for UFC 106 on November 21st. That fight was cancelled after Brock was unable get a full training camp in because he was too fatigued to train properly. Originally there was a belief Lesnar may have contracted the H1N1 flu. The fight was then tentatively scheduled for UFC 108 on January 2nd. Now that the news that the champ mono has broken the fight has been pushed back to March at the earliest.
This is a huge disappointment to fight fans. Brock Lesnar is not the most popular fighter but he is the biggest Pay-Per-View draw. This may sound like a contradiction but it’s true. There are lots of fans who love Brock but there are just as many, if not more, that want to see him beaten. The diehard MMA fans don’t like him because of his former pro-wrestling background which they think hurts the image of their sport. They also did not like his post fight antics after his most recent fight at UFC 100. His post fight trash talking to his downed opponent Frank Mir was thought to be a black eye to a sport hoping to gain legitimacy to the mainstream audience.
That leads us to the fight versus Carwin. Carwin is an undefeated up and coming heavyweight contender, who along with Cain Velasquez, is looked at as the future of the heavyweight division and greatest threat to Brock’s championship. He was very vocal in the distain for Lesnar’s post fight antics. He is also thought to be a difficult match-up for Lesnar as he is a division II wrestling champion similar in size. It is very unfortunate that now the fans are forced to wait nearly half a year to get this highly anticipated match.
