President Hugo Chavez today congratulated Venezuela’s baseball team Leones del Caracas for Friday’s victory over rivals Navegantes del Magallanes. The team moves on to the Caribbean series to defend its title.
Chavez acknowledged the finals series between both teams was extremely competitive and took seven games to crown Venezuela’s 2009-2010 champion. What changes now is the rivalries are set aside since Leones del Caracas will be representing all Venezuelans in the upcoming tournament.
Venezuela’s president added its time to root for Leones del Caracas and hope the team can win on its own soil. Venezuela will be hosting the tournament in the Margarita Island. So they have home field advantage with unconditional support from their fans considering the stakes of defending their title. Last year the country’s Tigres de Aragua were crowned Caribbean champions, but failed to make into the qualifying round.
The recently crowned champs Leones will add ten players from other teams to their roster, which applies to other teams participating in the tournament. Venezuela will face Mexico, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic, who are the reigning kings of the tournament with the most championships.
Two teams that used to Participate were Panama and Cuba. Last time both teams participated was back in the 1050’s.
It’s a rare occasion but baseball is the one time when politics will never be the topic of conversation. It will be about fans screaming, yelling, cheering and chanting songs to root for their team.
Chavez in his finals statements thanked both organizations for giving the country a beautiful seven game series, which gave fans plenty to be happy about.
