I got a response from Target and this is a good one.

I am not a law scholar. I do not pretend to be. I am just someone who tries to understand why the hell people do the stupid things that they do.

Normally, I would do some research on an issue and then give my two cents and move on. Living in MN we get a lot of the pro-ethanol propaganda and to be fair, I am not very knowledgeable on the subject.

It is almost the 4th of July. It is getting hot outside and we had our first big thunderstorm of the year this past week. I love this time of the year. As we move forward celebrating another Independence Day I think it is appropriate to look at some current news stories affecting our nation.

I never took an economics course in college and this is something that I deeply regret. Recently, China announced that they would allow their currency (the Yuan) to float more freely. In their economy they have tighter controls and restrictions, specifically; they have artificially devalued their currency. This means that their Yuan is worth less then what it would be if they did not devalue it.

This is thoroughly disgusting. It was bad enough that we went to war with Iraq almost solely to spur the defense industry. It is bad enough that we had a vice-president who was head of this company.

Well, the first year or so of Obama’s administration has been interesting. The healthcare battle seems to finally be over as the Democrats have successfully pushed through the much needed reform bill. But, the war for reform has just begun and if the previous battle was any indication, it will not be easy.

What a great way to start the day. I wake-up and read that China has sold $34.2 billion worth of US treasury bonds. This means that Japan is once again the largest holder of US debt! It is way better to have our debt in the hands of a trusted ally rather then a power-hungry adversary. That is just international relations 101.

It is obvious to many people that our nation is undergoing a change and we are trying to do so at a time of unparalleled debt. This can be a tricky thing to do. How can one manage the budget, fight multiple wars and have socially progressive programs? This seems like a recipe for disaster, bankruptcy and possibly far worse.

The Senior Research Analyst Gene Munster, from Piper Jaffray in Minneapolis, predicts an increase in sales for the Apple computer in 2010. There is also much hype and anticipation for a possible revelation of Apple’s new tablet that will transform the industry with new cutting edge technology and increase sales.

In somewhat stunning news, CNN.com is reporting that Google China might be shutting down. Google is reportedly upset with the censorship and hacking that is going on with their Chinese operations. In a move that seems to be forcing the hand of the Chinese government, Google is planning on saying ‘stop the censorship or we are leaving!’

Since February 1, 2006, Ben Bernanke has been the Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of the United States of America. As you can see by the graph below, the US economy has not done well under Bernanke’s control.

Campbell’s soups have been trusted basics of nutrition all of my life. I have always considered Campbell’s soups to be a safe, economical and nutritious choice for a quick meal. There is nothing more American than a meal of a grilled cheese sandwich and a hot bowl of soup. Recent news that I have been blithely consuming a hefty dose of bisphenol-A with my Campbell’s soups is shocking. Bisphenol-A, a coating the seals the inside of metal containers is implicated as having dire effects to humans on a molecular level.

Dutch Trading Company, Trafigura, has agreed to pay $46m to the 30,000 people who were harmed because of their illegal dumping of toxic waste in the African state of Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast). This is to be in addition to the $198 million that was paid by Trafigura directly to the government of Cote d’Ivoire.
This case caught my attention for a few reasons. First off, anytime a multi-national corporation is accused of harming 30,000 people in Africa I think it is important to say something.
