Japan Again!

Japan Again!

What a great way to start the day. I wake-up and read that China has sold $34.2 billion worth of US treasury bonds. This means that Japan is once again the largest holder of US debt! It is way better to have our debt in the hands of a trusted ally rather then a power-hungry adversary. That is just international relations 101.

USA Marijuana for Profit.

USA Marijuana for Profit.

It is obvious to many people that our nation is undergoing a change and we are trying to do so at a time of unparalleled debt. This can be a tricky thing to do. How can one manage the budget, fight multiple wars and have socially progressive programs? This seems like a recipe for disaster, bankruptcy and possibly far worse.

Another Trust Betrayed: Campbell’s Soup and Bisphenol-A

Campbell’s soups have been trusted basics of nutrition all of my life. I have always considered Campbell’s soups to be a safe, economical and nutritious choice for a quick meal. There is nothing more American than a meal of a grilled cheese sandwich and a hot bowl of soup. Recent news that I have been blithely consuming a hefty dose of bisphenol-A with my Campbell’s soups is shocking. Bisphenol-A, a coating the seals the inside of metal containers is implicated as having dire effects to humans on a molecular level.

Trafigura

Trafigura

Dutch Trading Company, Trafigura, has agreed to pay $46m to the 30,000 people who were harmed because of their illegal dumping of toxic waste in the African state of Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast).  This is to be in addition to the $198 million that was paid by Trafigura directly to the government of Cote d’Ivoire.

This case caught my attention for a few reasons. First off, anytime a multi-national corporation is accused of harming 30,000 people in Africa I think it is important to say something.

Cocaine in the Red Bull

There is cocaine in the Red Bull and according to the official Red Bull Colawebsite, “Why not? And we simply believe that a cola can also be made from natural ingredients. Just like back in the old days. The cola from Red Bull can do without a secret formula. On the contrary: all our ingredients are listed on the back of the can. Thanks to its special recipe, the cola from Red Bull is not just a cola, but a cola of a special kind: strong and natural.”
