United States hegemony is unwavering. A Realist perspective about the current balance of power would tend to agree that the United States is the leading State actor in the anarchic system of International Politics. For the United States to maintain it’s dominance it must maintain a strong national will, a large and technological superior army and further the spread of free market philosophy.

In a move to shore up far-right voters, French President Nicolas Sarkozy has resorted to nationalistic rhetoric aimed at reducing immigration, strengthening border security and protecting European goods. During recent campaign stops in Paris he has threatened to suspend French participation within the Schengen Area, has called for a European styled “Buy American Act,” and he has sought to halve the total amount of immigrants arriving in France while also slashing the state welfare they are able to receive.
