I was sitting in my 10th grade Chemistry class on September 11th of 2001. I remember my teacher, Mr. Sufka telling us what had happened. We were able to see some images from Yahoo, but the internet was overwhelmed that day and our schools TVs were unfortunately down for repair. We discussed what happened and what could happen next. We all knew we were going to war. This weighed heavily with Mr. Sufka who was an Army Reservist, as well as one of our best teachers.

On December 17, 2010 in Sidi Bouzid, Tunisia, a 26 year old street vendor named Mohamed Bouazizi lit himself on fire. The theft and beatings from the local government officials had become too much for this man to bear. His livelihood had been ruined and there was nothing he could do about it; he felt powerless.

The collective, society, power as a group. These are concepts that are used to demonize the left. Collective bargaining is bad, whether it is a union or average people looking to negotiate the prices of prescription drugs. In the US it is the individual who is lauded, Microsoft would be nothing without Bill Gates, the US is solely led by the President; we put extra weight to the success and failures of the individual.

Korea has been a troubled peninsula for the last century. The Japanese ruled Korea from 1910 until 1945, they implemented labor camps, stripped the land of its wealth and attempted to erase Korean language, culture, art and history. In 1945 Korea was taken over by the Soviets and the Americans with an agreement for the Soviets to stop at the 38th parallel.

It is amazing how quickly (or so it seems) that things can change. One decade we have growth, jobs, relative peace and people seemed to get along. One decade later we have economic collapse of numerous corporations and countries, possible war between the two Koreas, a debt crisis in Washington bogged down by partisanship and now Putin is threatening to build more nukes.
